Construction

Construction was to begin on Friday, February 19th.  Although the Oak Glen Road Improvement Project has not quite begun yet, I have seen some activity on Oak Glen Road that seems to be in preparation for the upcoming construction.  The project will be from 5th Street to Bryant and will consist of road widening, sidewalks, curb and gutters and signal lights at Sunnyside and Oak Glen.  During the construction, they will maintain at least one lane of traffic in both directions and they will try to limit their work during the morning and afternoon school traffic congestions.  The estimated completion date is July 2010.

I am unsure at this time how this will affect the flow of traffic in and out of school; however, what I do know is that it is imperative that you turn right out of the circular driveway after dropping off or picking up your children.  There are signs that say "Right Turn Only" at the end of the driveway but these signs are frequently ignored.

We will need to work together to maintain safety and order for the sake our children before and after school during this construction period.

Traffic at Dismissal Time

Please be aware that the school has received a number of phone calls from community members complaining about the traffic after school.  The specific complaint is that they can't get up the street to their homes because there is a long line of cars waiting to get into the circular driveway to pick up their children.  In order to get by the line of cars, residents must drive on the opposite side of the street.  The school is not responsible for traffic beyond the circular drive-way.  If you are on the street and you choose to wait in line to enter the circular drive-way, you may be subject to a traffic violation - CVC 22400.

School administration suggests:  If you are not in the circular drive-way at dismissal time, park across the street when picking up your children.  We are fortunate to have such a huge parking lot so close to the school.  Traffic tickets are expensive and can be avoided at Ridgeview by parking across the street in designated parking spots.

CVC 22400 (a):  ... No person shall bring a vehicle to a complete stop upon a highway so as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the stop is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

Box Top Contest

The end of this current Box Top Contest has been extended to  Friday, March 5th.  All proceeds from the Box Top contests go to supporting our First In Math Program.  For PTA to purchase First In Math for all students in grades 1-6, it takes about 70 box tops per student.  Please let your family members (Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and Friends) know we are collecting the box tops and supporting our students in Mathematics.

Pedestrian Safety

Thank you so much for your vigilant attention during drop-off and pick-up times at Ridgeview.  It takes our whole school community to keep our students safe.  Here are a few safety tips for students.  This list is from the the Safe Kids Organization.

*  Do not cross the street alone if you're younger than 10 years old
*  Stop at the curb before crossing the street
*  Walk, don't run, across the street
*  Look left, right, and left again before crossing
*  Walk facing traffic
*  Make sure drivers see you before crossing in front of them
*  Do not play in driveways, streets, parking lots or unfenced yards by the street
*  Wear white clothing or reflectors when walking at night
*  Cross at least 10 feet in front of a school bus
